TIMING BELT, REPLACE
This engine is classified as a free-wheeling engine. Because of this free-wheeling design, if the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, there is less chance of a piston contacting an open valve. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.
.Disconnect the battery cables, then remove the battery.
.Loosen the righthand front wheel lug nuts, then raise and support the vehicle with jack stands. Remove the righthand front wheel and tire assembly.
.Loosen the righthand front inner splash shield attaching bolts, then position the splash shield out of the way.
.Remove the righthand lower front engine support damper bolt.
.Support the engine using a suitable jack and wooden block, then remove the righthand front engine support damper.
.Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition control module.
.Remove the air inlet connector attaching bolts and hose clamps, then the air inlet connector.
.Remove the A/C compressor and alternator drive belt.
.Remove the power steering pump and water pump drive belt.
.Remove the A/C compressor and alternator drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket assembly.
.Remove the power steering pump and water pump drive belt tensioner pulley.
.Remove the upper timing belt cover.
.Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connectors.
.Place the transaxle in Neutral, then rotate crankshaft in the clockwise direction and position the number 1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke. Ensure the crankshaft damper white mark is aligned with the "0" mark on the lower timing belt cover and the camshaft sprockets are aligned with the marks on the inner timing belt cover, Fig. 1.
.Remove the crankshaft damper retaining bolt. Using a suitable puller, remove the crankshaft damper.
.Remove the timing belt lower cover.
.Remove the timing belt center cover, then disconnect the crankshaft position sensor wire and grommet.
.Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley lock nut, then using a 6 mm hex wrench, rotate the pulley 180° to release timing belt tension, Fig. 2. After releasing the timing belt tension, tighten the lock nut to hold the tensioner pulley in the released position.
.Remove the timing belt.
.Ensure the camshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned with the mark on the timing belt inner cover, Fig. 1. Also ensure the crankshaft sprocket timing mark is aligned with the oil pump cover mark.
.Install the new timing belt. When installing the belt, position the three yellow lines on the belt to the index marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Ensure the lettering on the belt faces toward the rear of the engine.
.Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley lock nut.
.Install the timing belt center cover. When installing the timing belt center cover, ensure the crankshaft position sensor wire and grommet are properly positioned. Torque the center cover attaching bolts to 62-97 inch lbs.
.Install the timing belt lower cover. Torque the attaching bolts to 62-97 inch lbs.
.Install the crankshaft damper and pulley. Torque the attaching bolt to 112-127 ft. lbs.
.Rotate crankshaft two turns in the clockwise direction, then align the yellow mark on the crankshaft pulley with the "0" mark on the lower timing belt cover.
.Remove the plastic cover from the lower timing belt cover.
.Through the opening in the lower timing belt cover, torque the timing belt tensioner lock nut to 24-38 ft. lbs., then install the plastic cover once again.
.Rotate the crankshaft in the clockwise direction approximately 60°, aligning the white mark on the crankshaft damper with the timing belt lower cover "0" mark. Ensure the camshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned with the timing marks on the timing belt inner cover, Fig. 1.
.Connect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
.Install the upper timing belt cover.
.Install the power steering pump and water pump drive belt tensioner pulley.
.Install the A/C compressor and alternator drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket assembly.
.Install the power steering pump and water pump drive belt. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
.Install the A/C compressor and alternator drive belt. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
.Install the air inlet connector.
.Connect the wiring harness to the ignition control module.
.Install the front engine support damper, then remove jack and wooden block supporting the engine.
.Install the lower front engine support damper bolt.
.Install the front splash shield.
.Install the wheel and tire, then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
.Connect the battery ground cable.
.Inspect the ignition timing and adjust as required.
