AVENGER, JOURNEY & SEBRING CONVERTIBLE & SEDAN 1988
With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
.Release fuel system pressure as follows:
a.Remove the fuel filler cap.
b.Remove fuel pump fuse from TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module).
c.Start the engine and run until the engine stalls.
d.Attempt to restart the engine until it will no longer run.
e.Place the ignition switch in the Off position.
.Note and record the radio anti-theft codes and station presets, then disconnect the battery ground cable from the remote jumper terminal.
.Remove both cylinder head covers, then loosen the rocker arm assemblies.
.Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle with jack stands.
.Remove the accessory drive belt cover, then the drive belt.
.Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
.Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts, then position the pump aside with the hoses attached.
.Remove the crankshaft damper center bolt.
.Remove the crankshaft damper using Chrysler puller tool No. 1023 and insert tool No. 9020-R, or equivalents.
.Remove the lower timing belt front cover retaining bolts, Fig. 1.
.Remove the jack stands, then lower the vehicle.
.Support the engine using a suitable floor jack.
.Remove the air cleaner element housing assembly.
.Remove the upper front engine mount attaching bolts, then the mount.
.Disconnect the fuel supply line at the fuel rail.
.Remove the upper and front timing belt cover retaining bolts, then the covers.
.Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark aligns with the TDC mark on the oil pump housing, and the camshaft sprocket timing marks are between marks on the rear timing belt covers, Fig. 2.
.Remove the timing belt tensioner.
.Remove the timing belt.
.If the camshafts have rotated from their marks, always rotate them toward the direction nearest the timing marks. Do not turn them a full revolution or piston and valve contact may result.
.After noting the proper running direction, install the new belt by starting at the crankshaft sprocket and moving in a counterclockwise direction. Keep tension on the belt as it positions around the tensioner pulley.
.Position the timing belt tensioner in a soft-jawed vise, then slowly compress plunger into tensioner body, Fig. 3.Total tensioner bleed down should take approximately 5 minutes. Index the tensioner in the vise in the same way it is installed on the engine.
.When the timing belt tensioner plunger is compressed into the tensioner body, install a suitable pin into the body and plunger to keep the plunger in place until installation, Fig. 3.If the tensioner will not be installed soon, it should be stored in a vertical position with its plunger facing upward.
.While holding the tensioner pulley against the belt, install the tensioner into its housing and torque the bolts to 250 inch lbs.
.Each camshaft mark should still fall between the cover marks.
.After the tensioner is securely in place, remove the retaining pin to allow the tensioner to expand to the pulley bracket.
.Rotate the crankshaft sprocket two revolutions and inspect all the timing marks, which should properly align within their respective locations. If the marks do not align, repeat the procedure.
.Install the timing belt covers.
.Install the upper front engine mount as follows:
a.Position mount and torque bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
b.Install fore aft member and torque bolts to 74 ft. lbs.
c.Install mount bolt and torque to 35 ft. lbs.
.Connect the fuel supply line to the fuel rail.
.Install the air cleaner element housing.
.Remove the floor jack supporting the engine.
.Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle with jack stands.
.Install the power steering pump. Torque the retaining bolts to 17 ft. lbs.
.Install the crankshaft damper using Chrysler bolt C-4685-C1, special tool No. 6792-1, or equivalents. Install crankshaft damper center bolt and torque to 70 ft. lbs.
.Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. Torque the accessory drive tensioner fasteners to 250 inch lbs.
.Install the engine accessory drive belts.
.Torque the rocker arm and shaft assemblies to 275 inch lbs., in sequence shown in Fig. 4.
.Install both cylinder head covers and gaskets. Torque cylinder head cover bolts to 90 inch lbs.
.Install fuel pump fuse into TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module).
.Connect the battery ground cable at the remote jumper terminal.
.Connect a suitably programmed scan tool to the DLC (Data Link Connector) located under the lefthand side of the instrument panel and perform the Cam/Crank Variation Relearn procedure. Follow scan tool instructions on the scan tool display.
.Start the engine and allow it to idle for one minute. Ensure no fuel leaks are present.
.Operate the engine at 1600-2000 RPM for 10 minutes to release any trapped air from the timing belt tensioner.
