This engine is classified as a free-wheeling engine. Because of this free-wheeling design, if the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, there is less chance of a piston contacting an open valve. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval. Valve to valve interference is possible if camshafts are rotated independently.
With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage.
1.Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
2.Loosen the righthand front wheel and tire assembly lug nuts.
3.Raise and safely support the vehicle with jack stands, then remove the wheel and tire assembly.
4.Remove the righthand inner splash shield.
5.Remove the accessory drive belts.
6.Remove the crankshaft damper retaining bolts.
7.Remove the crankshaft damper using DaimlerChrysler puller 1026 and insert 6827-A, or equivalents.
8.Remove the alternator drive belt idler pulley.
9.Remove the alternator and mounting bracket, if necessary.
10.Remove the timing belt lower cover attaching bolts, then the lower cover.
11.Remove the timing belt upper cover attaching bolts, then the upper cover.
12.Remove the coolant recovery reservoir, if necessary.
13.Remove the purge duty solenoid and wiring harness from the righthand engine mount, if necessary.
14.Remove the two righthand engine mount vertical fasteners from the frame rail. Do not remove the large nut at the end of the core.
15.On Caravan and Voyager models,, loosen the righthand engine mount horizontal fastener.
16.On all models, safely support the engine and transmission with a suitable jack. Place a suitable wooden block between the jack and engine assembly.
17.Raise the jack slightly to relieve the load from the engine mount.
18.On 1997-2000 Breeze, Cirrus, Sebring Convertible and Stratus Sedan models, proceed as follows:
a.Remove the three bolts attaching the engine support assembly to the engine bracket.
b.Position the A/C drier aside.
c.Remove engine coolant recovery container.
d.Remove the righthand engine mount.
19.On 2001-07 Sebring and Stratus Sedan models, proceed as follows:

d.Remove the right engine mount.
20.On Caravan and Voyager models, remove the vertical and horizontal fasteners from the righthand engine mount side bracket, then the engine mount and support bracket.
21.On all models, align the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks, Fig. 1. The trailing edge of the sprocket tooth should be aligned with the oil pump housing mark, or the camshaft marks will be improperly set. When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine from crankshaft.
22.On 1997-2002 models, position a 6 mm hex head wrench to the timing belt tensioner pulley. Also insert an 3 mm hex head wrench into the tensioner pulley pin hole, Fig. 2. With the 6 mm hex head wrench, rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise until the 3 mm hex head wrench can be inserted into the locking hole on the engine.
23.On 2003-06 models, with the 6 mm hex head wrench, rotate the tensioner pulley clockwise until there is enough slack to allow for timing belt removal.
24.On all models, remove the timing belt. With the timing belt removed, do not rotate camshaft as damage to valve components may occur.
25.On 1998-2004 models, if the timing belt was damaged due to incorrect alignment (tracking), the timing belt tensioner assembly must be replaced. Replace the timing belt tensioner as follows:
a.Remove the timing belt idler pulley.
b.Ensure the arrow marks on both camshaft sprockets are facing upward.
c.On Breeze, Cirrus, Sebring Convertible and Sedan and Stratus Sedan models, while holding the camshaft sprocket in position with DaimlerChrysler tool No. 6847, or equivalent, loosen the sprocket bolt. Remove both camshaft sprockets.
d.On Caravan and Voyager models, while holding the camshaft sprocket in position with DaimlerChrysler tool Nos. C4687 and C4687-1, or equivalents, loosen the sprocket bolt. Remove both camshaft sprockets.
e.On all models, remove the rear timing belt cover to engine attaching bolts, then the rear timing belt cover.
f.Remove the timing belt tensioner attaching bolts. Remove the tensioner as an assembly.
g.To install, position the tensioner to the engine and install lower mounting bolt. Do not tighten the lower mounting bolt at this time.

i.Torque the lower tensioner mounting bolt to 45 ft. lbs., then remove the engine mounting bracket bolt used for alignment from the tensioner upper mounting bolt hole.
j.On 1998-2002 models, install the timing belt rear cover. Torque the rear cover attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.
k.On 2003-06 models, install the timing belt rear cover. Torque the rear cover attaching M6 bolts to 105 inch lbs. and M8 bolts to 250 inch lbs.
l.On 1998-2006 models, install the timing belt idler pulley. Torque the idler pulley mounting bolt to 45 ft. lbs.
m.Position the camshaft sprockets on the camshafts. Ensure the arrow marks on both camshaft sprockets are facing upward.
n.On 1998-2002 Breeze, Cirrus, Sebring Convertible and Sedan and Stratus Sedan models, while holding the camshaft sprocket in position with DaimlerChrysler tool No. 6847, or equivalent, torque the sprocket bolts to 75 ft. lbs.
