TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE
1.Drain cooling system into a suitable container.
2.Remove valve covers.
3.Remove radiator fan shroud.
4.Rotate engine until timing mark on crankshaft damper aligns with TDC mark on timing chain cover, Fig. 1, and camshaft sprocket V6 marks are at 12 o'clock position, Fig. 2.
5.Remove power steering pump.
6.Remove access plug from lefthand and righthand cylinder heads for access to chain guide fasteners, Fig. 3.
7.Remove oil fill housing to gain access to righthand side tensioner arm fastener.
8.Remove crankshaft damper bolt.
9.Remove crankshaft damper using puller tool No. 1026 and insert tool No. 8513, or equivalents.
10.Remove front cover.
11.Collapse primary chain tensioner, then hold tensioner in collapsed position using a suitable pin.
12.Remove secondary timing chain tensioners. Cover oil pan opening. Plate behind lefthand secondary chain tensioner could fall into oil pan.
13.Remove camshaft position sensor. Do not damage CMP sensor. Do not place sensor near any magnetic source.
14.Remove lefthand and righthand camshaft sprocket bolts.
15.While holding lefthand camshaft steel tube with camshaft holder tool No. 8428A, or equivalent, remove lefthand camshaft sprocket. Slowly rotate camshaft approximately 15 degrees clockwise to a neutral position.
16.While holding righthand camshaft steel tube with camshaft holder tool No. 8428A, or equivalent, remove righthand camshaft sprocket. Slowly rotate camshaft approximately 45 degrees counterclockwise to a neutral position.
17.Do not forcefully rotate camshafts or crankshaft independently of each other, or intake valve to piston contact will occur.
18.Remove idler sprocket assembly bolt.
19.Slide idler sprocket assembly and crankshaft sprocket forward simultaneously to remove primary and secondary timing chains.
20.Remove primary chain tensioner.
21.Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a.Lightly compress secondary chain tensioner piston until piston is flush with tensioner body.
b.Release ratchet pawl by pulling pawl back against spring force through access hole on side of tensioner.
c.While continuing to hold pawl back, push ratchet device to approximately 2 mm from tensioner body.
d.Install pin tool No. 8514, or equivalent, into hole on front of tensioner, Fig. 4. Slowly open vise to transfer piston spring force to lock pin.
e.Position primary chain tensioner over oil pump and insert bolts into lower two holes on tensioner bracket. Torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
f.Install righthand side chain tensioner arm. Torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
g.Install lefthand side chain guide. Silver bolts retain guides to cylinder heads and black bolts retain guides to engine block. Torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
h.Install lefthand side chain tensioner arm. Torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
i.Install righthand side chain guide. Torque bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
j.Install both secondary chains onto idler sprocket.
k.Align two plated links on secondary chains to be visible through two lower openings on idler sprocket (4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions).
l.Once secondary timing chains are installed, position holding tool No. 8429, or equivalent, to hold chains in place for installation.
m.Align primary chain double plated links with timing mark at 12 o'clock position on idler sprocket.
n.Align primary chain single plated link with timing mark at 6 o'clock position on crankshaft sprocket.
o.Lubricate idler shaft and bushings with clean engine oil.
p.Install all chains, crankshaft sprocket and idler sprocket as an assembly, Fig. 5.
q.After guiding both secondary chains through block and cylinder head openings, affix chains using suitable elastic strap.
r.Align timing mark on idler sprocket gear to timing mark on counterbalance shaft drive gear, then fully seat idler sprocket, Fig. 6.
s.Align lefthand camshaft sprocket L dot to plated link on chain.
t.Align righthand camshaft sprocket R dot to plated link on chain.
u.Remove holding tool, then install both sprockets to camshafts.
v.Remove excess oil from bolts, then install sprocket bolts, but do not tighten at this time.
w.Verify that all plated links are aligned with marks on sprockets and "V6" marks on camshaft sprockets are at 12 o'clock position. Ensure plate between lefthand secondary chain tensioner and block is correctly installed.
x.Install both secondary chain tensioners. Lefthand and righthand chain tensioners are not common.
y.Remove all three locking pins from tensioners. After pulling locking pins out of each tensioner, do not manually extend tensioner ratchets.
z.Torque lefthand and righthand camshaft sprocket bolts to 90 ft. lbs. using spanner wrench tool No. 6958 with adapter pin tool No. 8346, or equivalents.
aa.Rotate engine two full revolutions, then verify timing marks are at following locations: Primary timing chain idler sprocket dot is at 12 o'clock position. Primary timing chain crankshaft sprocket dot is at 6 o'clock position. Secondary timing chain camshaft sprockets "V6" marks are at 12 o'clock position. Counterbalance shaft drive gear dot is aligned to idler sprocket gear dot.
