TIMING CHAIN, REPLACE
Caution: With the timing chain removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
1.Disconnect and isolate battery ground cable.
2.Remove righthand engine mount and bracket.
3.Remove drive belt tensioner.
4.Remove crankshaft balancer, sensor shield and crankshaft sensor.
5.Remove oil pan to front cover bolts.
6.Remove engine front cover mounting bolts, then the front cover.
7.Inspect timing chain for overall in-and-out movement, which should not exceed one inch.
8.Inspect sprockets for visible signs of wear or damage.
9.Clean gasket mating surfaces at timing chain cover and cylinder block.
10.If oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, oil pan must be removed and gasket replaced.
11.Align timing marks on sprockets, Fig. 1, so they are as close together as possible.
12.Remove timing chain dampener.
13.Remove camshaft sprocket bolts, Fig. 2.
14.Remove camshaft sprocket and chain, then crankshaft sprocket.
15.Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a.Ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC.
b.Assemble timing chain on sprockets with their timing marks aligned, Fig. 1.
c.Torque camshaft sprocket bolts to 74 ft. lbs., then tighten an additional 90° turn.
d.Apply sealer No. 12346004, or equivalent, to bolt threads.
e.Install engine front cover bolts.
f.Torque front cover bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
g.Install oil pan to front engine cover bolts and torque to 124 inch lbs.
h.Install crankshaft sensor and shield. Caution: Do not adjust crankshaft sensor.
i.Crankshaft sensor bolt is designed to permanently stretch when installed. Caution: Do not install a standard bolt. Components will not be tightened properly if improper bolt is used.
j.Torque crankshaft Damper bolt to 110 ft. lbs., then tighten bolt an additional 76° turn.
k.Install accessory drive belt.
l.Inspect cooling system and fill to proper level with recommended coolant, as required.
m.Fill engine crankcase to proper level with recommended engine oil.
n.Connect battery ground cable.
o.Start engine and confirm proper operation, and ensure there are no leaks.
p.Clear DTC(s) using a suitably programmed scan tool.
