TIMING CHAIN & GEAR SET, REPLACE
REMOVAL
1.Remove intake manifold as outlined under "Intake Manifold, Replace."
2.Remove rocker covers, then raise and support vehicle.
3.Remove engine undercover, righthand front wheel and engine side cover.
4.Remove drive belts, idler pulley bracket and power steering pump.
5.Remove camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, then set No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke.
6.Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt, then remove oil pan rear cover plate and set screwdriver or other suitable tool in ring gear to stop crankshaft rotation.
7.Remove crankshaft pulley with suitable puller, then the air conditioning compressor and bracket.
8.Remove front exhaust tube and support.
9.Support right and left sides of engine with suitable hoist, and remove righthand engine mounting, bracket and nuts.
10.Remove center member, then the upper and lower oil pans as outlined under "Oil Pan, Replace."
11.Remove water pump cover, then the front timing chain case retaining bolts and case.
12.Remove internal timing and upper chain guides, then the timing chain tensioner and slack side chain guide.
13.Remove first chain camshaft sprocket retaining bolts, then the first chain camshaft sprockets, crankshaft sprocket and timing chain.
14.Insert suitable stopper pin into camshaft tensioners, then remove second chain exhaust camshaft sprocket bolts and exhaust sprockets.
15.Remove second chain intake camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and intake sprockets.
16.Remove lower chain guide, then scrape all traces of liquid gasket from timing chain case and water pump cover.
INSTALLATION
1.Install crankshaft sprocket, then set No. 1 piston to TDC on compression stroke.
2.Install lower chain guide on dowel pin with front mark on guide facing upside.
3.Align marks on second chain intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets, and second camshaft chain, Fig. 1.
4.Install intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets. Exhaust sprocket is thicker than intake.
5.Remove camshaft tensioner stopper pins.
6.Align crankshaft sprocket mating mark with chain gold matchmark, Fig. 2.
7.Attach lower timing chain on water pump sprocket.
8.Install first chain camshaft sprockets onto timing chain by matching sprocket dowel grooves with camshaft and tighten bolts to specifications.
9.Install timing chain, ensuring mating marks and matchmarks are aligned.
10.Install internal and upper chain guides, then the tensioner and slack side guide.
11.Apply liquid gasket to front timing chain case and install rear case pin into dowel pin hole of front timing case.
12.Torque bolts 1 and 2 to 18.8-23.1 ft. lbs. and bolts 3-20 to 8.7-10.1 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 3.
13.Apply liquid gasket to water pump cover and install.
14.Apply liquid gasket to rocker covers and install.
15.Torque rocker cover bolts to .7-2.2 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Figs. 4 and 5, then torque bolts to 4.3-5.8 ft. lbs.
