TIMING BELT, REPLACE
This engine is classified as an Interference engine. If the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, a piston may contact an open valve. Piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve, piston and other engine components. In some cases valve to valve contact may be experienced when the timing belt breaks or jumps timing. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.
With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
.Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
.Remove the engine appearance cover.
.Rotate the serpentine drive belt tensioner arm clockwise, then remove the serpentine drive belt.
.Remove the power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley.
.Remove upper and lower timing belt covers, Fig. 1.
.Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks to set the No. 1 piston at TDC of the compression stroke, Fig. 2.
.Remove the timing belt auto-tensioner.
.Remove the timing belt tensioner and the timing belt.
.Inspect the belt tensioner and idler pulley for backlash or irregular noise while rotating pulleys and replace as required.
.Install the idler pulley to the water pump boss, making sure that the pin is properly seated. Torque the bolt to 36-43 ft. lbs.
.Install the tensioner arm and plain washer to the cylinder block. Torque the bolt to 25-40 ft. lbs.
.Install the tensioner pulley to the tensioner arm. Torque the attaching bolt to 31-40 ft. lbs.
.Compress the auto-tensioners rod and secure with a set pin.
.Install the auto-tensioner. Tighten the attaching bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs.
.Ensure the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned. Do not rotate camshaft sprocket more than 3 teeth in either direction as piston to valve contact may result. If camshaft sprocket is unavoidably rotated more that 3 teeth in either direction, rotate crankshaft slightly counterclockwise before rotating the camshaft sprocket.
.Install the new timing belt over the crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, lefthand camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, righthand camshaft sprocket and the tensioner pulley. Ensure the timing belt is properly installed.
.Pull out the set pin from the auto-tensioner and allow the timing belt to tension, Fig. 3.
.Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns in the clockwise direction, aligning the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks. Ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke.
.After waiting approximately 5 minutes, with No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke measure the projected length of the auto-tensioner rod, Fig. 4. The projected rod length should be .27-.31 inch.
.If the auto-tensioner rod projected length is not within projected range, remove and reinstall the timing belt.
.Verify that the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks are still aligned. If the marks are not aligned, the timing belt must be removed and installed.
.Install the upper and lower timing belt covers. Torque the attaching screws to 72-96 inch lbs.
.Install the crankshaft pulley. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 130-138 ft. lbs.
.Install the drive belt tensioner pulley.
.Install the drive belt Idler pulley.
.Install the power steering pump pulley.
.Rotate the serpentine drive belt tensioner arm clockwise, then install the serpentine drive belt.
.Install the engine appearance cover.
.Connect the battery ground cable.
.Start engine and inspect for proper operation.
