motor kia rio 2001

TIMING BELT, REPLACE
This engine is classified as an Interference engine. If the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, a piston may contact an open valve. Piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve, piston and other engine components. In some cases valve to valve contact may be experienced when the timing belt breaks or jumps timing. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.
With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
1.Record the radio station presets, then disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
2.Remove the power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belts.
3.Remove the alternator drive belt.
4.Remove the water pump pulley.
5.Remove the crankshaft pulley and timing belt guide plate.
6.Remove the timing belt upper and lower covers.
7.Turn the crankshaft clockwise, aligning the crankshaft sprocket timing mark with the engine timing mark, Fig. 1.
8.Ensure the intake camshaft sprocket "I" mark and exhaust sprocket "E" mark are aligned with the cylinder head cover marks, Fig. 2.
9.Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley lock bolt, then remove the pulley.
10.Remove the timing belt.
11.Install the timing belt tensioner pulley with a new spring. The tensioner spring should be replaced when replacing the timing belt.
12.Position the tensioner to its furthest point away from the timing belt and tighten the lock bolt.
13.Ensure the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks are aligned, Fig. 3.
14.Install timing belt over the crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, exhaust camshaft sprocket, intake camshaft sprocket and the tensioner pulley.
15.Ensure there is slack in the timing belt between the idler pulley and exhaust camshaft sprocket or between intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets.
16.Loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley lock bolt and allow the tensioner spring to tension the timing belt. Do not add any additional force to the tensioner.
17.Torque the timing belt tensioner pulley lock bolt to 28-38 ft. lbs.
18.Rotate crankshaft two full clockwise revolutions, aligning the timing marks, Fig. 3.
19.Inspect the camshaft sprocket timing marks. If the marks are not aligned, remove the timing belt and install once again.
20.Apply a pressure of 22 lbs. midway between the camshaft sprockets and measure timing belt deflection, which should be .39-.50 inch. If deflection is not within limits, remove the timing belt and install once again.
21.Install the timing belt lower and upper covers. Torque the attaching bolts to 70-96 inch lbs.
22.Install the timing belt guide plate and crankshaft pulley. Torque the attaching bolts to 10-13 ft. lbs.
23.Install the water pump pulley. Torque the attaching bolts to 10-13 ft. lbs.
24.Install the alternator drive belt. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
25.Install the power steering and A/C compressor drive belt. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
26.Connect the battery ground cable.
27.Start the engine and ensure it operates properly.
28.Reset the radio station presets and the clock.
