CYLINDER HEAD, REPLACE
REMOVAL
1.Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under "Precautions," then drain cooling system.
2.Remove air cleaner and disconnect all vacuum lines, electrical harnesses and fuel lines from throttle body.
3.Remove throttle linkage.
4.Remove accessory drive belts.
5.Remove intake manifold power brake vacuum connection.
6.Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe from manifold.
7.Remove and set aside power steering pump assembly.
8.Disconnect coil pack electrical connector and remove coil pack and bracket.
9.Remove cam sensor and fuel injector electrical connectors.
10.Remove timing belt and camshaft sprocket.
11.Remove valve cover.
12.Remove rocker arm shaft assemblies.
13.Remove cylinder head bolts.
14.Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a.Apply oil to bolts before installing.
b.Install four short bolts in positions 7, 8, 9 and 10, Fig. 1.
c.Using sequence shown in Fig. 1, tighten cylinder head bolts in four steps. First step, torque bolts to 25 ft. lbs.; second step, torque bolts to 50 ft. lbs.; third step, torque bolts to 50 ft. lbs.; fourth step, tighten bolts an additional 1/4 turn without using a torque wrench.
