CYLINDER HEAD, REPLACE

1.Discharge fuel system pressure as outlined under "Precautions."
2.Remove left and righthand windshield wiper arms.
3.Remove hood to cowl top seal.
4.Remove cowl top vent louver assembly.
5.Remove windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly.
6.On hatchback models, remove cowl to register duct.
7.On sedan models, remove righthand front air shutter seal.
8.Remove cowl top to cowl inner brace.
9.On all models, remove cowl top outer panel.
10.Remove air cleaner assembly, intake air tube and air cleaner bracket.
11.Remove vehicle battery and battery tray.
12.Disconnect No. 3 radiator hose and reserve tank hose.
13.Separate No. 1 radiator hose from cylinder head.
14.Disconnect water by-pass hoses.
15.Disconnect throttle body electrical connector.
16.Disconnect ventilation hose and union to connector hose.
17.Remove oil level dipstick.
18.Remove intake manifold as outlined under "Intake Manifold, Replace."
19.Remove oil level dipstick guide tube.
20.Disconnect fuel line from fuel rail.
21.Disconnect brake booster vacuum tube.
22.Disconnect camshaft position sensor connector.
23.Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor.
24.Remove bolts, separate sensor bracket, and then disconnect heated oxygen sensor.
25.Disconnect heater water inlet hose.
26.Remove bolt and separate water by-pass pipe No. 1.
27.Remove two bolts and disconnect wiring harness.
28.Separate front exhaust pipe assembly.
29.Remove three bolts and remove exhaust manifold support bracket.
30.Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectors.
31.Remove timing chain as outlined under "Timing Chain, Replace."
32.Using sequence, Fig. 1, uniformly loosen and remove 19 bearing cap bolts in several steps, then remove camshaft bearing caps from camshafts.
33.Remove camshafts from cylinder head.
34.Using sequence, Fig. 2, uniformly loosen and remove 10 cylinder head bolts with an 8 mm bi-hexagon wrench in several steps. Remove 10 plate washers.
35.Remove cylinder head and gasket.
36.Remove four bolts and remove exhaust manifold heat insulator No. 1.
37.Remove three bolts and two nuts and remove exhaust manifold.
38.Remove bolt and remove harness bracket.
39.Remove two bolts and remove booster vacuum tube.
40.Remove bolt and remove camshaft position sensor.
41.Remove engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
42.Remove water by-pass hose.
43.Remove bolt and remove harness bracket.
44.Remove three bolts and remove fuel delivery pipe assembly with four fuel injectors.
45.Remove two delivery pipe No. 1 spacers.
46.Remove four injector vibration insulators.
47.Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a.Using sequence, Fig. 3, torque exhaust manifold bolts and nuts in several steps to 20 ft. lbs.
b.Apply light coat of engine oil to cylinder head bolt threads.
c.Using sequence, Fig. 4, uniformly tighten 10 cylinder head bolts and plate washers in several steps. First step, torque bolts to 22 ft. lbs; second step, tighten bolts an 90°; third step, tighten bolts an additional 90°.
d.Install bearing caps in order shown in Fig. 5, and provisionally tighten 19 bolts.
e.Using sequence, Fig. 6, uniformly tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts in several steps. Torque camshaft bearing cap No. 1 bolts to 17 ft. lbs. Torque camshaft bearing cap No. 2 bolts to 108 inch lbs.

33.Remove camshafts from cylinder head.
34.Using sequence, Fig. 2, uniformly loosen and remove 10 cylinder head bolts with an 8 mm bi-hexagon wrench in several steps. Remove 10 plate washers.
35.Remove cylinder head and gasket.
36.Remove four bolts and remove exhaust manifold heat insulator No. 1.
37.Remove three bolts and two nuts and remove exhaust manifold.
38.Remove bolt and remove harness bracket.
39.Remove two bolts and remove booster vacuum tube.
40.Remove bolt and remove camshaft position sensor.
41.Remove engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
42.Remove water by-pass hose.
43.Remove bolt and remove harness bracket.
44.Remove three bolts and remove fuel delivery pipe assembly with four fuel injectors.
45.Remove two delivery pipe No. 1 spacers.
46.Remove four injector vibration insulators.
47.Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
