TIMING BELT, REPLACE
These engines are classified as a free-wheeling engine. Because of this free-wheeling design, if the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, there is less chance of a piston contacting an open valve. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.
.Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
.On models equipped with front wheel drive, raise and support the vehicle with jack stands. Remove the righthand wheel and tire assembly, then the inner splash shield.
.On all models, loosen the crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley retaining bolts.
.Remove the accessory drive belts, then the crankshaft and water pump pulleys.
.Remove the nuts securing the timing belt cover to the cylinder head and the cylinder block, then the timing belt cover halves, Fig. 1.
.Support the engine with a suitable jack, then remove the righthand engine mount bolt and raise the engine slightly.
.Loosen the timing belt tensioner, then remove the timing belt, Fig. 2.
.Rotate the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft until markings on the sprockets are aligned as illustrated in, Fig. 3.
.Rotate the camshaft until the arrows on the hub are aligned with the No. 1 camshaft cap to cylinder head line, Fig. 4. The small hole must be located along vertical center line.
.Ensure that all timing marks are still aligned.
.Install the timing belt. Inspect all alignment marks.
.Set the belt tension so that the DaimlerChrysler belt tension tool C-4703 axis is within 15° of horizontal, Fig. 2.
.Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions clockwise, then position at TDC. Tighten the tensioner locknut.
.Install the engine mount bolt.
.Install the timing belt cover halves.
.Install the crankshaft and water pump pulleys, then the accessory drive belts. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
.Install the inner splash shield, then the wheel and tire assembly.
.Remove the jack stands, then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
.Connect the battery ground cable.
