VALVES, ADJUST
Measure valve clearance with engine cold and feeler gauge positioned between rocker arm and valve stem. Adjust intake and exhaust valves to specifications.
1.Bring No. 1 cylinder to top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke by turning the crankshaft until the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the timing mark "O."
2.Check rocker arm shaft bracket nuts for looseness. Torque any loose rocker arm shaft brackets 1 through 8 to 16 ft. lbs., then brackets 9 and 10 to 6 ft. lbs., in sequence shown in Fig. 1.
3.Check for play in the No. 1 intake and exhaust valve pushrods. If No. 1 cylinder pushrods are depressed, rotate crankshaft 360° to position No. 1 cylinder on the compression stroke.
4.Adjust following valves:
a.No. 1 intake and exhaust.
b.No. 2 intake.
c.No. 3 exhaust.
5.Rotate crankshaft 360° and adjust the following valves:
a.No. 2 exhaust.
b.No. 3 intake.
c.No. 4 intake and exhaust.
6.Install valve cover. Tighten to specifications.

TIMING BELT, REPLACE
This engine is classified as an Interference engine. If the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, a piston may contact an open valve. Piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve, piston and other engine components. In some cases valve to valve contact may be experienced when the timing belt breaks or jumps timing. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.
With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
1.Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
2.Position the No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression stroke.
3.Remove the AIR pump drive belt, if equipped.
4.Remove the engine cooling fan, Fig. 1.
5.Remove the water pump drive belt and pulley.
6.Remove the A/C compressor drive belt and the drive belt tensioner.
7.Remove the starter motor.
8.Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley using Isuzu flywheel holder tool No. J-38674 or equivalent to hold the crankshaft in position. Remove the holder tool.
9.Remove the timing belt cover.
10.Loosen the timing belt tensioner retaining bolt, then move the tensioner away from the timing belt and secure in position. It may be required to remove the timing belt tensioner spring.
11.Remove the timing belt from the sprockets.
12.Ensure the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket marks are aligned, Figs. 2 and 3.
13.Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket (1), the oil pump sprocket (2), camshaft sprocket (3) and the tensioner pulley (4), Fig. 4.
14.Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolts and allow the belt to tension. If the tensioner spring was removed, install the spring prior to loosening the bolts.
15.Tighten the tensioner retaining bolt, then rotate the crankshaft two turns counterclockwise. Ensure the crankshaft and camshaft marks are aligned, Figs. 2 and 3. If the sprocket marks are not aligned, remove and install the timing belt once again.
16.Loosen the timing belt tensioner adjusting bolt and allow the belt to tension, Fig. 5. After the belt has tensioned, tighten the tensioner bolts.
17.Install the timing belt cover.
18.Install the crankshaft pulley and the bolt using Isuzu flywheel holder tool No. J-38674 or equivalent to hold the crankshaft in position. Torque the bolt to 87 ft. lbs.
19.Remove the flywheel holder, then install the starter motor.
20.Install the A/C compressor drive belt and the drive belt tensioner, then the water pump pulley and drive belt. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
21.Install the engine cooling fan.
22.Install the AIR pump drive belt, if equipped. Refer to "Accessory Drive Belt Tension" for proper belt tension.
23.Connect the battery ground cable.
24.Inspect and adjust the ignition timing.
