TIMING CHAIN GUIDE R&R
REMOVAL
Caution: Do not attempt to hang the engine by hooking the chain to any other component.
Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the crankcase, chain cover and oil pan.
Do not turn the crankshaft without the chain tensioner.
Do not lift the engine more than required.
1.Disconnect cable from battery ground terminal.
2.Remove No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly.
3.Remove righthand front wheel.
4.Remove lefthand engine under cover.
5.Remove righthand engine under cover.
6.Remove righthand front fender apron seal.
7.Drain engine oil.
8.Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.
9.Remove No. 2 righthand engine mounting stay.
10.Remove engine moving control rod sub-assembly.
11.Remove No. 2 righthand engine mounting bracket.
12.Remove v-ribbed belt.
13.Remove alternator assembly.
14.Remove vane pump assembly.
15.Remove ignition coil assembly.
16.Disconnect ventilation hose.
17.Disconnect No. 2 ventilation hose.
18.Remove the two bolts and disconnect the two engine wires, Fig. 1.
19.Remove the eight bolts, two nuts, and cylinder head cover, Fig. 2.
20.Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
21.Remove crankshaft pulley.
22.Remove crank position sensor.
23.Remove the oil pan 12 bolts and two nuts, Fig. 3.
24.Insert the blade of an oil pan seal cutter between the crankcase and oil pan. Cut through the sealer and remove the oil pan, Fig. 4.
25.Remove the two nuts, No. 1 chain tensioner and gasket, Fig. 5.
26.Install the No. 1 engine hanger and No. 2 engine hanger with the bolts. Torque bolts to 28 ft. lbs., Fig. 6.
27.Attach a sling device to the engine hangers and chain block.
28.Lift the engine upward using the chain block.
29.Remove the bolt, nut and spring type belt tensioner, Fig. 7.
30.Remove the bolt, nut and non-spring type belt tensioner, Fig. 8.
31.Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers.
32.Remove the bolt and disconnect the front engine mounting insulator, Fig. 9.
33.On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove the bolt and disconnect the engine lateral control rod, Fig. 10.
34.On all models, remove the two bolts and disconnect the steering gear return tube clamps from the frame, Fig. 11.
35.Remove the four nuts from the righthand engine mounting insulator, Fig. 12.
36.Raise the engine and remove the righthand engine mounting insulator, Fig. 12.
37.Remove the three bolts and righthand engine mounting bracket, Fig. 13.
38.Remove timing chain cover sub-assembly.
39.Remove timing chain case oil seal.
40.Remove the crankshaft position sensor plate, Fig. 14.
41.Remove the bolt and chain tensioner slipper, Fig. 15.
42.Remove the two bolts and chain vibration damper, Fig. 16.
43.Remove the bolt and timing chain guide, Fig. 17.
44.Remove the chain sub-assembly, Fig. 18.
45.Remove the crankshaft timing sprocket, Fig. 19.
46.Turn the crankshaft by 90° counterclockwise to align the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket with the groove of the oil pump, Fig. 20.
47.Insert a 4 mm diameter pin into the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket to lock the gear in position, and then remove the nut, Fig. 21.
48.Remove the bolt, chain tensioner plate and spring, Fig. 22.
49.Remove the chain tensioner, oil pump driven sprocket and chain, Fig. 23.

INSTALLATION
When replacing the V-ribbed belt tensioner with a new one, do not pull out the pin.
Do not lift the engine more than required.
Remove any oil from the contact surfaces.
Install the oil pan within three minutes after applying seal packing.
Do not start the engine for at least two hours after installing.
If the hook releases the plunger while the chain tensioner is being installed, set the hook again.
Install the cylinder head cover within three minutes of applying seal packing.
Do not add engine oil for at least two hours after installing the cylinder head cover.
1.Set the crankshaft key into the left horizontal position, Fig. 24.
2.Turn the drive shaft so that the cutout faces upward, Fig. 24.
3.Align the yellow mark links with the timing marks of each gear, Fig. 25.
4.Install the sprockets onto the crankshaft and oil pump shaft with the chain wrapped on the gears, Fig. 25.
5.Temporarily tighten the oil pump drive shaft sprocket with the nut, Fig. 25.
6.Insert the damper spring into the adjusting hole, and then install the chain tensioner plate with the bolt. Torque bolt to 108 inch lbs., Fig. 26.
7.Align the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket with the groove of the oil pump, Fig. 26.
8.Insert a 4 mm diameter pin into adjusting hole of oil pump drive shaft gear to lock gear in position, and then tighten nut. Torque nut to 22 ft. lbs., Fig. 27.
9.Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate the crankshaft clockwise by 90°, and align the crankshaft key to the top, Fig. 28.
10.Install the crankshaft timing sprocket, Fig. 29.
11.Install the chain vibration damper with the two bolts. Torque bolts to 80 inch lbs., Fig. 30.
12.Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
13.Turn camshafts with a wrench (using the hexagonal lobe) to align timing marks of camshaft timing gear with each timing mark located on No. 1 and No. 2 bearing caps, Fig. 31.
14.Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft to position the crankshaft key to face up, Fig. 32.
15.Install the chain onto the crankshaft timing sprocket with the gold or pink mark link aligned with the timing mark on the crankshaft, Fig. 33.
16.Using service tool No. 09309-37010, or equivalent and a hammer, tap in the crankshaft timing sprocket, Fig. 34.
17.Align the gold or yellow mark links with each timing mark located on the camshaft timing gear and sprocket, then install the chain, Fig. 35.
18.Install the timing chain guide with the bolt. Torque bolt to 80 inch lbs., Fig. 36.
19.Install the chain tensioner slipper with the bolt. Torque bolt to 14 ft. lbs., Fig. 37.
20.Install the sensor plate with the "F" mark facing forward, Fig. 38.
21.Install timing chain case oil seal.
22.Install timing chain cover sub-assembly.
23.Install the V-ribbed belt spring type tensioner to engine by first tightening bolt and then tightening the nut. Torque fasteners to 44 ft. lbs.
24.Install the non-spring type belt tensioner with the bolt and nut. Torque fasteners to 44 ft. lbs.
25.Install the engine mounting bracket with the three bolts. Torque bolts to 40 ft. lbs.
26.Raise the engine and install the righthand engine mounting insulator.
27.Install the righthand engine mounting insulator with the four nuts. Torque nut A to 70 ft. lbs. and nut B to 64 ft. lbs.
28.Install the steering gear return tube clamps to the frame with the two bolts. Torque bolts to 69 inch lbs.
29.Install the front engine mounting insulator with the bolt. Torque bolt to 64 ft. lbs.
30.On models equipped with manual transaxle, install engine lateral control rod with bolt. Torque bolt to 66 ft. lbs.
31.On all models, remove any old packing material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and oil pan.
32.Apply a continuous bead of seal packing with a diameter .157-.177 inch. Use Toyota® Genuine Seal Packing Block, Three Bond® 1207B, or equivalent, Fig. 39.
33.Install the oil pan to the cylinder block.
34.Uniformly tighten the 12 bolts and two nuts in sequence. Torque fasteners to 80 inch lbs., Fig. 40.
35.Install crank position sensor.
36.Install crankshaft pulley.
37.Release the ratchet pawl, then fully push in the plunger and hook the hook to the pin so that the plunger is in the correct position, Fig. 41.
38.Install a new gasket and the chain tensioner with the two nuts. Torque nuts to 80 inch lbs.
39.Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise, then disconnect the hook from the plunger knock pin, Fig. 42.
40.Turn the crankshaft clockwise, then ensure that the plunger is extended, Fig. 43.
41.Remove any old packing material from the contact surface of cylinder head cover.
42.Apply seal packing to the two locations. Use Toyota® Genuine Seal Packing Block, Three Bond® 1207B, or equivalent, Fig. 44.
43.Install the cylinder head cover with the eight bolts and two nuts. Torque bolt A to 96 inch lbs., bolt B to 10 ft. lbs. and nut to 96 inch lbs., Fig. 45.
44.Install the two engine wires with the two bolts. Torque bolts to 74 inch lbs.
45.Install No. 2 ventilation hose.
46.Install ventilation hose.
47.Install the four ignition coils with the four bolts. Torque bolts to 80 inch lbs.
48.Install vane pump assembly.
49.Install alternator assembly.
50.Install v-ribbed belt.
51.Install No. 2 righthand engine mounting bracket.
52.Install engine moving control rod sub-assembly.
53.Install No. 2 righthand engine mounting stay.
54.Install front exhaust pipe assembly.
55.Add engine oil.
56.Connect cable to battery ground terminal.
57.Inspect for engine oil leak.
58.Inspect for exhaust gas leak.
59.Inspect ignition timing.
60.Install righthand front fender apron seal.
61.Install lefthand engine under cover.
62.Install righthand engine under cover.
63.Install righthand front wheel.
64.Install No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly.
